Our San Diego Implant Dentist Weighs In
If you are missing teeth, you may be wondering what the best restorative method is. While there is some debate when it comes to fixed dental bridges versus dental implants, the best solution will vary from person to person. Here at Advanced Dentistry & Implant Center, Dr. Mirkhan is committed to helping her patients select the right treatment option for their needs. Please review the important considerations below and feel free to contact us with any questions.
What to Consider with Dental Implants
As the name suggests, dental implants are new teeth that are permanently implanted into the jawbone. Implants are both a functional and aesthetic solution to missing teeth and are nearly indistinguishable from the surrounding natural teeth. Dental implants are a safe, proven treatment option with a 98% rate of success.
The traditional process for getting a dental implant involves:
- Placement of the implant into the jawbone
- A period of healing while the implant fuses to the jawbone
- Attachment of a small connector to bond the implant to the new tooth
With modern “All-in-One” dental implants, this process is even faster, allowing you to have every step of the process completed in just one day.
When compared with dental bridges, implants are the more costly option. However, implants are actually less expensive in the long term because they are a more permanent and less traumatic solution than bridges. A dental implant surgery performed by a credentialed dentist is less likely to result in tooth sensitivity, gum recession, bone atrophy, infections, and other related issues associated with the more invasive dental bridge procedure.

What to Consider with Dental Bridges
Dental bridges are another option to replace one or more missing teeth. Bridges involve the use of crowns on either side of the missing tooth, surrounding a prosthetic tooth/teeth, that are cemented into place. This procedure requires that you have healthy teeth on either side of the missing ones.
While it is true that dental bridges are the more economical option when compared to dental implants, price is not the only thing you should consider. Between these two options, dental bridges have a higher risk of oral complications due to the more invasive techniques needed to make them work.
The bridge procedure involves:
- Filing down the surrounding teeth
- Placement of a temporary bridge while the lab creates the permanent prosthesis
- Placement of the final bridge
Good oral care is absolutely essential to the outcome and longevity of a dental bridge. On average, bridges last about 5 to 7 years, but can last more than 10 years with good oral hygiene and regular professional cleanings.
