Part of having a healthy smile is making sure to maintain it, and preventative dental care now prevents problems from happening latter. That’s because a lot more goes into good oral health than simply brushing and flossing at home. By visiting our oral health professionals for dental cleanings and prevention in San Diego, you can ensure we will monitor your oral health so you can prevent any costly problems that might crop up over the years.

Some of the benefits of getting professional dental exams and cleanings twice a year include:

  • Enhancing oral health
  • Freshening breath and whiter teeth
  • Reducing the risk of or managing of gum disease
  • Screening for oral cancer
  • Checking for cavities
  • Recommending treatment you need for optimal oral health

What Can I Expect During My Exam & Cleaning?

A dental cleaning, also called a prophylaxis or scale and polish, involves the use of professional dental tools to hand scale and carefully remove built-up plaque or tartar that you simply cannot reach with a toothbrush. Once the teeth have been smoothed, your hygienist will polish the enamel and floss your teeth, while providing instructions on how to practice proper oral hygiene to maintain your dental health.

If you have significant plaque and tartar buildup, you may need a “deep cleaning,” which is also called scaling and root planing, which gets beneath the gumline that can cause or may already be causing infection beneath the gumline. This usually is done when the patient has some evidence of moderate to severe gum disease or receding gums. Once you’ve had a scaling and root planing (SRP), your hygienist will likely recommend coming to the dentist more often to monitor your gum disease and ensure you are maintaining your oral health.

After your cleaning, our dentist, Dr. Roya Mirkhan, will perform an oral exam and review your digital dental X-rays to check your overall dental health and check for any problems your hygienist did not detect, which may include cavities in need of fillings, or a root canal if the decay has penetrated deeply.
