Immediate Dental Implants vs. Typical Implant Timeline

Have you lost one or more teeth and are in need of a dental implant? If so, same-day dental implants may be an attractive and speedy solution to help restore your dental function and improve your smile. While traditional dental implants typically take several months before permanent teeth can be fitted, immediate loading implants allow patients to have natural looking-and-feeling teeth in as little as a single office visit.

How Do Same-Day Implants Work?

Traditionally, dental implants are surgically inserted into the jawbone without a crown and are left to heal for a period of three to six months. Once the implant has become firmly fused with the tissues of the jawbone, known as osseointegration, a crown is then fitted to the implant post. Depending on the number of missing teeth and the condition of a patient’s gums and jaw, the process of inserting a traditional dental implant can require three or more appointments and up to a year of healing time.

Thanks to advances in technology and dental techniques, dentists are now able to accurately and safely perform all of the necessary procedures in one day, including:

  • Taking molds
  • Performing extractions
  • Bone grafting
  • Inserting implants
  • Attaching temporary crowns

These functional and visually-pleasing temporary crowns allow a patient to have all the benefits of real teeth throughout the duration of their healing period, eliminating both the hassle and unsightly “missing teeth” look of having a crownless implant. After two to four months of healing, the temporary crown is easily swapped out with a permanent implant crown during a routine second appointment.
