What are Dentures?
A denture is a series of prosthetic teeth attached to a gum-colored base. Complete dentures are used when all teeth are missing, and partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. Full dentures consist of a complete arch of prosthetic teeth supported by a gum-colored base, which can be attached to the gums using adhesives. Partial dentures, meanwhile, are a series of prosthetic teeth that can be clasped to the back of your existing natural teeth.

The Dentures Process
Your teeth replacement process starts with a consultation with our prosthodontist. The dentist will examine your mouth and teeth to see if you’re a good candidate for dentures. If you are a good candidate, the dentist will develop a personalized treatment plan to consider your unique situation, such as the number of teeth you need to replace and whether you want full or partial dentures. The next step is taking impressions of your mouth and teeth using a putty-like material that hardens into a mold.
Once the impressions have been taken, the next step is to design your dentures. If you’re getting full dentures, they’ll be made to look like a complete set of natural teeth. If you’re getting partial dentures, they’ll be designed to blend in with your existing teeth. The dentures will be made out of either acrylic or porcelain. Acrylic dentures are less expensive, but they’re not as durable or lifelike as porcelain dentures. Your dentist will select the appropriate denture material based on your goals and preferences.
Once the dentures have been made, it’s time for the final fitting. Full dentures involve attaching them to the gum line using a special adhesive. Partial dentures will be attached to your existing teeth with clasps or brackets. It’s normal to feel slightly uncomfortable when you first get dentures. They may feel loose, and it may take a little while to get used to eating and speaking with them. But with time, you’ll adjust, and they’ll feel like a natural part of your mouth.
Types of Dentures:
Traditional (Removable) Dentures
Traditional dentures are made to fit over the gums and are held in place by suction or a denture adhesive. These dentures can be removed for cleaning and are usually less expensive than implant-supported dentures. Removable dentures are ideal for patients who don’t want to undergo surgery or can’t undergo surgery because of medical contraindications. However, since removable dentures are simply attached to the gums, they’re not as stable as natural teeth.
Implant-Supported Dentures
Implant-supported dentures are a more permanent solution — they are anchored into the jawbone via dental implants. These implants will fuse to the jawbone over time and provide a strong and stable foundation for the dentures. Once the implants have healed, the dentures are attached to the implants. Implant-supported dentures are not removable and more stable than traditional dentures. Additionally, they preserve the jawbone and prevent it from shrinking.
Caring for Dentures
Dentures need to be brushed daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and denture cleanser. Be sure to clean your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth as well. You should also remove your dentures at night to give your gums a chance to rest. Dentures should be stored in a denture wash or in water when not in use. You must follow your dentist’s aftercare guidelines and instructions to ensure your dentures remain safe.
