Dental Bridges
Can a dental bridge restore your smile?
A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) appliance and is an excellent
way to replace missing teeth. Having missing teeth can affect one's
speech, and it can make them feel uncomfortable when they smile. Teeth
have many functions, they improve one's speech, they allow people
to chew their food properly and they enhance the beauty of one's smile.
For those individuals who have one or more missing teeth, they may be
excellent candidates for a dental bridge, which has the capability of
restoring their beautiful smile, and sometimes even better than before.
A dental bridge literally "bridges the gap" that is created by
having one or more missing teeth. A dental bridge is made out of two
crowns for the two teeth that are on each side of the gap. With a crown, the
two anchoring teeth (abutment teeth) are crowned and a false tooth is
made to go in-between the two abutment teeth. The false teeth can be made
up of materials such as gold, porcelain, alloys, or any combination of
the above.
People sometimes wonder if a dental bridge will make it more difficult
to eat, on the contrary, dental bridges actually make eating easier than
before. However, until the patient becomes accustomed to eating with the
bridge, it's recommended that they eat soft foods and cut food into
small pieces.
There are several types of bridges. You and
Dr. Roya Mirkhan will discuss the
best options for your particular case. The "traditional bridge" is
the most popular type and is usually made of porcelain fused to metal.
This type of bridge consists of two crowns that go over two anchoring
teeth (abutment teeth) and are attached to pontics (artificial teeth),
filling the gap created by one or more missing teeth.
Reasons for a fixed bridge:
- Fill space of missing teeth
- Maintain facial shape
- Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position
- Restore chewing and speaking ability
- Restore your smile
- Upgrade from a removable partial denture to a permanent dental appliance
