What Are the Parts of a Dental Implant?

As a dental implant patient, you should learn what the three parts of a dental implant are. To be knowledgeable about your dental implant parts will help you to understand what a dental implant consists of and what is involved in the process, until you get to the last step of the process: getting your final implant crown as a part of restoring your smile.

The first part of a dental implant is called "implant body." The body of a dental implant is made of titanium. That is the most biocompatible material found. The body is screw-shaped for better adapting to the bone. The body of the implant is the part that will be inserted into the bone of your jaw where your missing tooth used to be.

The second part of a dental implant is called an "implant abutment." An implant abutment is a laboratory-fabricated peg tooth. This part will be screwed into the implant body. It comes in different shapes depending on the size and location of your dental implant.

The third part of a dental implant is called an "implant crown." The implant crown will be cemented into the implant abutment. Once cemented, you can now enjoy your implant as it feels and look just like a natural tooth.

Each step of the three parts described above has a timeline to be performed by your treating dentist. The first part, "implant body," is the surgical portion and usually takes about 2 – 3 months of healing or sometimes longer depending on the amount of bone available at the site of implant. After complete healing, a mold of your dental implant called an "impression" is taken and sent to dental laboratory to fabricate the implant abutment and implant crown.
