What to Do About Tooth Loss

Losing teeth may be a traumatic experience for many patients. Whether the tooth or teeth loss is due to an accident or from tooth decay and/or gum disease, they all the same require immediate attention.

The very first step is of course to see a dentist – a dentist who is more specialized in treatment of bone and gum tissues surrounding the teeth to prevent further loss of supporting structures. Oftentimes, treatment should consist of immediate extraction of the broken down tooth or teeth with a bone grafting procedure in conjunction with immediate dental implant placement in order to preserve further bone and gum loss in these affected areas.

The last step – the insertion of dental implant at the time of the initial treatment – is of utmost importance and is oftentimes neglected. The advantage of taking such action is to preserve the jaw bone and the gum height. This will prevent any future unaesthetic implant crown or crowns resulting in unpleasant smile line.

The common practice in many dental offices is to extract the bad tooth or teeth, place bone grafts, and then wait. While waiting for the healing of the extraction site, the patient will be wearing a flipper which is very uncomfortable and unaesthetic. Then after a few weeks or months, a dental implant or dental implants in case of multiple teeth loss will be inserted. The patient is now will undergo another healing phase of a few months wearing the same ugly temporary flipper. As mentioned earlier, due to the nature of the surrounding bone and gum tissues around the lost teeth, wearing a flipper without putting a crown on the newly implanted crowns will create both bone loss and gum tissue loss.
