Caring for Your Dental Implants

Now that you have gotten dental implants, it is important that you care of these as you would your natural teeth, even providing some additional care. For such an investment, taking some extra steps can help ensure that you get your money's worth from the dental implants.

Oral Care Ensures Dental Implant Success

Dental implants require a little more care than natural teeth. While it is good oral practice to regularly visit the dentist, quit smoking, and brush and floss your teeth after every meal, dental implants require cleaning the space between the teeth with a special brush, as well as extra care overall.

Immediately Following an Implant Procedure

After an implant has been placed, the gums surrounding the implant may be sore and inflamed. Irritating this space with a toothbrush may make it worse. Using an oral rinse or gel with antibacterial properties can be done until the area hurts less.

When the area is less sore, a soft toothbrush can be used in the area of the implant. Be sure to brush the area very thoroughly to remove harmful bacteria from the site.

Brushing Is Not Enough

Brushing your teeth after every meal is a basic step to preventing buildup of harmful bacteria but brushing alone is not enough to prevent the failure of dental implants.

Be sure to take steps besides brushing your implant, such as:

  • Flossing your teeth
  • Using an interdental brush
  • Brushing with antibacterial toothpaste
  • Regular visits to the dentist

Implants need this extra attention due to the ease of bacteria buildup on the implant. Bacteria can lead to gum inflammation, which can cause bone loss if it goes untreated. If the bone around an implant begins to break down, the implant can become loose in the bone and can fall out.

If well maintained, a dental implant can last an extremely long time. If you become concerned with your dental implant, contact Dr. Roya Mirkhan to help determine what the problem may be.
